VHA Inc., a national health care network, has recognized The Indiana Heart Hospital as a leading practice hospital for its work in preventing catheter-acquired urinary tract infections (CAUTI’s).
As a leading practice hospital, a team of VHA clinical experts will visit The Indiana Heart Hospital on September 9, to study and document the clinical processes, or “care bundle,” that is followed for the prevention of CAUTI’s. The VHA team and The Indiana Heart Hospital team will collaborate to develop a blueprint that maps out each step in the care process, ensuring that the blueprint outlines transferable knowledge and practice patterns. Once the blueprint is developed, VHA will disseminate it to 1,400 VHA member hospitals nationwide and encourage them to incorporate the practices into their patient care patterns.
“We’re honored to be recognized by VHA for our efforts to improve the quality of care we offer patients in our community,” said Cindy Adams, PhD and director of cardiovascular outcomes research with The Indiana Heart Hospital. “Our team is devoted to seeing that our patients get the very best care, and it’s gratifying to know that other hospitals around the nation will be encouraged to copy our approach.”
"We know if other hospitals apply the blueprint that The Indiana Heart Hospital has helped VHA develop, it will save lives and save our nation's health care system millions of dollars annually," said Trent Haywood, M.D., J.D., chief medical officer at VHA.
VHA also lauded The Indiana Heart Hospital’s efforts to foster teamwork across the organization, since teamwork is a key to improved performance.

The Indiana Heart Hospital has been granted accreditation by The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL) and The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). These accreditations recognize The Indiana Heart Hospital for its voluntary commitment to providing quality diagnostic testing in the areas of nuclear cardiology, nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and echocardiography.
“I am very proud of our dedicated staff and physicians who have worked so hard to reach these achievements,” said Kiran Kareti, M.D., medical director of Cardiovascular Testing for Community Heart and Vascular. “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, resulting in a loss of life every 32 seconds.
